Louis Rapp – Harmonimum Repair
The traditional material for making most of the harmonium is wood. Being a woodworker I love the texture and colors of wood but I also realize that it is not as stable as many man made materials and many of the problems I've encountered in this harmonium can be traced to warped wood so I decided to look at alternatives.
In searching the internet I found that I could buy carbon fiber tubing. Most of it is round but I located square cross section tubing that is about 3 mm on a side. I had to buy it direct from China but the price was low so I took a chance and ordered enough to replace all the key shafts. Delivery time was about two months and when it arrived it was exactly as advertised, 100 cm long hollow tube. It is very light and stiff. Now I had to figure out how to cut and drill it and attach it to the other parts.
My designs start on the computer using Autocad software to make an exact drawing of the harmonium as it currently is.
